Review: My Soul To Steal

Title: My Soul To Steal
Author: Rachel Vincent
Series: Soul Screamers #4
Cover Rating: 4.5♥

Goodreads Blurb: Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can't just pretend nothing happened. But "complicated" doesn't even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.

See, Sabine isn't just an ordinary girl. She's a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people's fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.

And Sabine isn't above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.

My Soul To Steal in 3 sentences
First line: By the time the second semester of my junior year began, I'd already faced down rogue grim reapers, an evil entertainment mogul, and hellions determined to possess my soul.
Favourite line: Tod gave me a strange look I couldn't intepret, and the blues in his irses shifted subtly for a moment before he got control of them. A hint ;)
Last line: But as I watched Sabine watching Nash watch me, I realised something I should have understood much sooner - as horrifying a threat as the Netherworld represented, learning to trust again in my own world might just be the scariest thing I'd ever had to do.

First, let me scream AHHH!!! This has to be my favourite cover up till now for this series! ^^ Love the blue. Although I'm taking away 0.5♥ for the cover rating because somehow the way the models are posed makes me think that the girl(Kaylee?)'s pregnant :P! But anyway, I still love it like I've always loved the covers of this series~

Yes, I have been a big fan of the Soul Screamers series since forever so you wouldn't be expecting any low ratings from me. However, there are some parts I didn't like. And I'm gonna start with just that. (Yeah I know I'm weird)

Through the first half of the story, I kept having mixed feelings about the relationship between Kaylee and Nash. I've never been really supportive of their relationship (because god, why can't Kaylee see how good Tod is as compared to Nash? GRR.) and now that they have relationship problems because of something that happened in the last book, I was all for them breaking up. But no, they kept hanging on to what thin thread of love(?) there is between them. I'm thinking more of obligation and habit. It was really frustrating seeing Kaylee being reluctant to let go when she is obviously not meant for him. Like how Tod tried to bring across to her and she still refused to face the fact. And between the ill-fated couple comes trudging her slutty ass, Sabine. Really, I can't help but use that word on her. Although I've come to sympathise with her by the end of the book though. It was hard though, I admit. To sympathise with such a stupid, boyfriend-snatching bitch. Not to mention that she's a hell of a nightmare. Oops. xP As much as I dislike the relationship matters between now the three of them, it played a huge part in the story and a very important factor of the evil scheme breeding in the Netherworld. Thus, I guess it was sort of necessary? :/

Besides that, I really liked Rachel's writing. My Soul To Steal is really a well-written, well-sewn piece of work. It is amazing how Rachel crafted the ongoings brilliantly as she kept us in suspense with the non-stop guessing of how the various events were actually linked together to constitute to one terrible outcome. Which didn't realise, of course. Because two Bean Sidles + one Reaper + one Mara is apparently a great combination of forces :)

Kaylee isn't the type of girl who appears to be very strong, be it physically or mentally. But, she is pretty clever and stubborn enough with great determination for her to not only survive but also help those around her. From the confused, helpless girl in the first book, she has evolved to be an almost-fearless Bean Sidle who might be getting into too much trouble for her own good. But there is no need to worry about her when she's got the two guys looking out for her. I'm really gonna just skip Nash, because he's pretty useless (heheh :P) and focus on my greatest book boyfriend crush: Tod ^^ I believe that most readers of Soul Screamers cannot help but swoon over this cute reaper who is always so protective of his brother's girlfriend. He is one of the sweetest guy I've ever read about (and seen). Although the possibility of Kaylee and Tod being together seems unlikely, because of their erm species? It is hard not to hope (in vain?) of that happy ending. Also, Tod is one of the main reasons I can't wait to read each book in the series so, really, read the books for Tod! xD

And there is one more guy in this book which I have to mention. I was almost switching allegiance to Team Alec! But that was before I'd learnt of his true identity. Which isn't very pretty but I guess still acceptable. He is somewhat swoon-worthy and I see a hint of a relationship forming but I suppose it wouldn't grow because, a girl can't have too many guys watching over her right? ;) Still, I want to read more of him, hope he's not cast out of the picture now that he doesn't have a reason to close to Kaylee.

All in all, I must say that Rachel's a great story teller, and Soul Screamers is one series you must not miss. Especially if you like fantasy YA and would want to develop a huge crush on someone undead (who is not a *coughs* vampire).

LEVEL OF INTOXICATION:

*If you're Team Tod too, head over to Fiktshun's blog to read about an interview conducted months ago with our favourite reaper here! ^^
Andd Rachel form Fiktshun is also the advocate for Kaylee in the YA tourney so do remember to show her your support when her turn comes and also, grab the lovely button! Why? Because Tod says so ;D
